Mitchell jobless rate up for 4th straight month

Posted: Updated:

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - The jobless rate in one of South Dakota's largest cities is up for the fourth straight month.

State officials say the number of unemployed people in Mitchell rose from 380 in January to 405 in February. The number of people looking for work has increased by 90 from December.

The Daily Republic reports that the jobless rate of 4.6 percent is the highest since March 2011, when it was 5.3 percent.

Bryan Hisel, executive director of the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce and Mitchell Area Development Corp., says the number is likely due to a mismatch between the job openings and the skills of people looking for work.

Hisel says he will become "more alert and concerned" if the trend continues into the summer months.
