Smartphone safety app adds South Dakota sex offenders to its database

Posted: Updated:

Keeping kids safe is something every parent thinks about.

We do our best to protect our kids from harm, but what about others who may live in our neighborhoods?

A new app can show you just who is living in your neighborhood.

It's an app called Alert ID, and it recently added South Dakota to its list of sex offender data bases.

You can access the app from your smartphone and online to find out just who might be living around the corner from you.

When our kids play outside, close to home,  we may assume they're safe.

But having a sex offender living in the neighborhood could make some parents nervous.

You can download the Alert ID app and see how many sex offenders could be near by

Randy Stewart, executive director with Apple Tree Children's Center, has many children under his watch. He believes the more information parents have at their fingertips, the more aware they can be to what and who is around their kids.

"It makes you realize how significant the issue is and to be more aware. I think it will help employees understand why they need to be very vigilant. We have pretty good security, when they're indoors, but when they're out on the playground we can't afford to have care givers not paying attention to who's coming and going so I think the net is a benefit.  To understand that its out there and is as prevalent as it is," Stewart said.

We spoke with many parents who told us it's something they may have thought about once  and looked it up online, but this app will send you notices so you can set it and forget it until you're notified.
