Smoking ban goes into effect for Sioux Falls parks

Posted: Updated:

If you plan on lighting up a cigarette the next time you're at a city park- think again.
A new policy in effect today will change where and when you can smoke in Sioux Falls' parks.

The new policy will bring signs to parks across the city. It is a ban that - one - bans the use of tobacco during any youth activities... and two - bans the use of tobacco on any city playground.

It's a new policy that the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Board say will be a good thing for the city.

Its already gained a lot of support from non-smokers and smokers alike. From chewing tobacco... cigarettes... and second hand smoke - the Health Department says tobacco is one of the leading causes of preventable death. so allowing kids to breath cleaner air is just one way we can make Sioux Falls a healthier place to live. Our own mayor - Mike Huether  - knows firsthand how important this really is. "It's a step. One other communities have taken around SD, the country. It's time for Sioux Falls to take that same step. As much as my dad wanted to stop smoking, he never did. ultimately, it killed him."

And at this point, the intent isn't to hand out a fine or discipline violators. This new policy more about educating people about the dangers of tobacco use in public... and keeping the air clean... especially around youth in parks and on playgrounds.

Sioux Falls now joins cities in at least nine states with similar bans...including Minnesota, where smoking is prohibited in Golden Valley's parks.

Here in South Dakota, Yankton is the only other city with a smoking ban in public parks.
