Update: Adult, child dead in apartment fire in Sioux Falls
The Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Chief says a child and an adult were killed Tuesday morning after an apartment caught fire in Sioux Falls Tuesday morning. Three children were taken away in an ambulance and treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out at 204 S. Williams Ave. in Sioux Falls. The apartment has four or five units inside it. The fire was reported at 8:45 am Tuesday. The first responding crews saw smoke and flames coming out of the back of the apartment.
When crews arrived they heard reports of people still inside the apartment. Division Chief Jeff Helm said one child died and it appeared that an adult died trying to go in after the child. Firefighters haven't been able to confirm it, but the adult may have rescued 3 children before going back in to rescue another.
Firefighters say intense flames made finding the fire victims difficult.
A half hour later smoke was still billowing from the apartment. Fire Chief Jim Sedaris said the apartment did not have a sprinkler system. Crews were trying to contain the fire mainly to one apartment.
The cause is under investigation. Stay with KSFY News and KSFY.com for updates.
