Snow gate study released, Mayor recommends snow gates

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday, the Sioux Falls City Council was presented with the results and financial analysis of snow gate testing over the past three winters.

The analysis shows the use of snow gates increases the time it takes to plow all city streets by two to four hours, increases fuel consumption by zero to 13 percent, and increases operation time by six to 13 percent.

The one-time cost to purchase snow gates would be just under $200,000. The total annual impact would be $325,000-$600,000 based on increased fuel, labor, and maintenance costs.

After looking at the date, Mayor Mike Huether gave his recommendation to the Council.

"It's pretty simple, I think the city of Sioux Falls should implement snow gates, city wide," said Huether.

Even though snow gates were recommended, the Council cannot move to purchase or implement snow gates for the entire city fleet until the citizens of Sioux Falls vote on whether to invest in snow gates next year.
