Sioux Falls apartment evacuated after overnight kitchen fire

Posted: Updated:

Around 12:15 Wednesday morning Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was called to a small fire at an apartment building located at 709 N. Lewis Avenue. The building is near I-229 and the 10th Street exit. First-arriving units found smoke coming from Apartment 107. Crews forced entry into the apartment and found a small kitchen fire. The fire was extinguished with a fire extinguisher and firefighters removed one resident from the apartment.

Apartment 107 sustained light fire damage and moderate smoke damage. The person who was removed from the apartment was evaluated by paramedics at the scene but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

Everyone in the building was evacuated. Some people living there told us when alarms went off they saw smoke out in the hallway and quickly made their way out of the building. People living at the apartment were eventually allowed back in.

The building did not have a sprinkler system. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone to never leave food that is cooking, unattended.
