500 sign up for new Huron recycling program

Posted: Updated:

HURON, S.D. (AP) - Nearly 500 households have signed up for Huron's new recycling program.

Huron Solid Waste Superintendent Dale Fortin tells the Huron Plainsman that city is hoping to get that number over 1,000 by the first of June.

The voluntary, single-stream recycling program got a major boost recently when the state announced it had approved a grant that will pay for half of the city's startup costs.

City Commissioners will open bids next week for collection equipment and the recycling containers.

The city wants to be in a position to pick up recyclables on the same day it picks up brown garbage containers and green composting containers at residences.
