It's a safe bet this snowfall brought out more than a handful of snow blowers here in Sioux Falls, but this is only 5 or 6 inches. Just a few miles west people are dealing with double that amount.
Everyone in Eastern South Dakota woke up to find snow, but folks in Hartford found nearly a foot of fresh powder.
"I woke up this morning and I said there's no way we got that much snow and my husband came out snow blowing and said yeah I guess we did! So yeah kind of shocking!" Said Laura Johnson.
While others weren't too surprised.
"Hmm, a little bit but then again it is South Dakota." Said Mathew Petty.
The scraping of shovels is what you'll hear across Hartford, mixed in with the laughs of children, finally getting to enjoy mother nature's bounty.
"We had school called off for the past two days out here so yes we have been cooped up indoors so they were really excited to get outside today and be able to play in the snow to make snow forts snowman and have a snowball fight." Said Nathan Moore.
Just looking down the street, it's easy to notice that Hartford residents fared much better than their Sioux Falls neighbors. There are hardly any fallen branches and most power lines remain intact.
"We didn't get the ice that Sioux Falls song but we did get a little bit some of our trees are bent over but other than that I think we just got the majority of the snow." Said Johnson.
"We haven't had as many trees and branches coming down, I checked my trees yesterday and there's some ice on there but not enough to bring them down so we got lucky in that sense." Said Moore.
Lucky for the kids as well, as this snow is great for sculpting the perfect snowball. So the only danger is your little brother, not a dangling branch.
"We're keeping an eye on them and yeah this is the first time I've ever seen those evergreen branches all the way down to the ground like that so you can tell there is some weight on there." Said Moore.
While there are plenty of options for kids to play, the same can't be said for the big kids.
Jake: What are you going to do the rest of the day?
Petty: probably shovel snow!
So for now it's all about digging out and moving forward
"Definitely taking advantage, we'll be out here shoveling a little bit, but that's about it." Said Johnson.
West Central School District has yet to call of school for Friday, but for kids in Sioux Falls their weekend starts now.
