Sioux Falls runners show support for Boston at 'Joy Run'

Posted: Updated:

Since last Monday, runners across America have showed their support for Boston from New York to Los Angeles and right here Sioux Falls.

Despite the gloomy weather, dozens came out to take part in the "Joy Run" at Augustana College.

A philosophy professor at Augustana organized the run to promote the idea that "we should not forget to live."

And because of last week's tragic events in Boston, he wants people to remember there's still joy in the world.

Dozens of runners took to the sidewalks of Augustana college to do just that, celebrate the joy of life.

The run started just after 2:26 p.m. as runners, joggers and even a few walkers came out in the slightly wet weather to show their support for the people of Boston.

Augustana associate professor, Dr. David O'Hara, was on a treadmill at the gym, watching the events in Boston unfold on TV and was inspired to organize this race.

"I thought these people are out doing something for the shear joy of it. They way out number the people who were trying to take away that joy. I thought I'm going to run a little farther, just for the sake of the joy of running, because these people weren't able to finish their run. Then I thought, why not invite others to do that too," Dr. O'Hara said.

Runner Nanci Fuller said "we just think it's a good thing how Boston all came together and we want to show our support for Boston."

"To show Boston that we're thinking of them, even if we're all the over in South Dakota, that it feels like home, even though it's not our home," Fuller added.

Doctor O'Hara said in no way does he want to diminish the events of last week.

But he told us there's enough bad news out there, that he wanted there to be some good.
