Indoor hitting, training facility benefits from extended winter

Posted: Updated:

You can bet all of this late April wintry weather is keeping many ball diamonds and soccer fields around town pretty empty.

But there is, at least, one spot in town reaping the benefits.

"Most years we're busy during winter but this year is different with the weather going on right now, we've extended our season here," Legends owner Gary Walz said.

That extended season means big business for Legends Indoor Hitting and Training Facility.

"When teams can get outside, obviously, they'll use their field time. That was my main goal in starting Legends. It's South Dakota, there's a need and demand. Sports have changed. Kids want to be training year 'round," Walz said.

Parents and coaches know, as unpredictable as Mother Nature is, it's good to have a plan-B.

"It allows us to come in and practice. If we didn't have legends, we wouldn't have practice, work on fundamentals. For tournaments that are coming up, it would have put us behind the competition that's already been practicing in warmer climates," Coach and parent Jean Davis said.

"This year, it hasn't allowed them to get out and get that extra practice. had a huge effect on it. hopefully they can get out soon, if not, see me or anyone else," Walz said.

The facility is for everyone, young and old, skilled or not.

"I try to create a fun environment for kids to come, get better at their passion and have a good time. bring a bat, ball and smile on your face. even though it's not outside, it's second best," Walz said.
