BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. (AP) - Mysterious gunfire prompted a western South Dakota school to go into lockdown mode, but officials say students were not endangered.

The South Park School in Belle Fourche was locked down Tuesday after multiple reports of someone shooting in the nearby Hay Creek area.

Police walked the area and found nothing, and an officer was posted at the school for the rest of the day.

Authorities say the safety plan at the school worked properly.
