Avera Medical Minute: Avera Hospitals among the best in the state and nation

Posted: Updated:

Every hospital works hard to be the best. But when it comes to the Mount Rushmore state, only the Avera Heart Hospital and Avera Sacred Heart have the hardware to prove it.

"When you hire intelligent people and you give them the tools, they do a good job for you." Said Jon Soderholm, President and CEO of the Avera Heart Hospital.

The two Avera hospitals are among the nation's elite. They received awards from Healthgrades for Outstanding Patient Experience and Patient Safety Excellence. Only 84 other hospitals out of 4500 were awarded both.

"We use the word patient safety, a safe environment. We know that patients are in their most vulnerable times and we're here to protect and guard them." Said Pam Rezac, President and CEO of Avera Sacred Heart.

For Avera Sacred Heart it's become a tradition of excellence. The hospital has been awarded for their outstanding patient experience for six consecutive years. Every staff member at both hospitals, go through training to make sure they communicate and educate patients and their families. Doing their best to treat the whole person, not just the disease.

"It's mind, body, spirit, all of the above and then considering the whole continuing of their care. What happened before they came in the hospital, what is occurring right now, and then what are their needs when they go home." Said Rezac.

The facts speak for themselves. A quick trip online will show you where these hospitals stack up and how they surpass the national averages. Doing this little bit of homework before your next hospital stay could lead to a better outcome .

"It's amazing the number of families that do their research now and will come here as opposed to somewhere else they bypass other places that do what we do." Said Soderholm.

Using Healthgrades is not just a helpful tool in choosing a doctor but by ranking the hospitals, the hope is that it will inspire others to improve.

"It'll raise all ships, there's nobody that can afford to be down here with someone else up here and everybody will get better." Said Soderholm.

These are not awards you can buy, they are most definitely earned with exceptional care for every patient during every procedure.

"It's 1200 people that work here and the combination of their efforts and it takes everybody from the direct patient care to the support staff to the people who do the paperwork and collect the bills to ensure that we have exceptional care to the patients that we serve." Said Rezac.

Having a trophy for the lobby is nice but that doesn't mean these hospitals will get complacent. Soderholm will be the first to tell you, it's a challenge to get to the top but it's even harder to stay there.

"We're not perfect and I don't know that we will ever be perfect because of the business we're in, but we can always be better." Said Soderholm.

That strive for perfection along with national recognition are just two more reasons why, you should look no further.

Choosing the right hospital is a very big deal. The ones with these awards have a much lower chance of their patients dying or having complications. It's your health so why risk it?
