SF Area Humane Society in urgent need of pet food

Posted: Updated:

It was a busy weekend as the Sioux Falls Humane Society kicked off spring with the first ever Spring Garden, Craft and Bake Sale. It was a fundraiser to benefit the shelter of the nearly 280 animals.

The weekend-long event featured gardening supplies, plants, baked goods and plenty of dog/cat treats.

"It's so fun to see people supporting us by purchasing the items. A great way to raise money raise money for the shelter," Volunteer Coordinator Alma Sehovic said.

Just last week, the Humane Society was down to 3-4 bags of pet food. Lewis Drug has stepped up to help launching Operation Feed-A-Pet.

But Lewis Drug can't do it alone. You can drop off any bag of dry dog or cat food to Lewis Drug stores in Sioux Falls.

Cans for cats are also welcome.

Every pound of food received by Lewis Drug will be matched and donated to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

"When you run low, you want to stock up, so you don't have to worry about the problem of 'is this going to last a week or so'. it's wonderful to see the food coming in, we're happy about that," Sehovic said.

The Humane Society goes through more than 100 pounds of pet food per day and heavily rely on the food donations to avoid taking funds from other places like medical vet visits and other emergencies.
