Help Feeding South Dakota by voting on Facebook

Posted: Updated:

Feeding South Dakota needs your help to secure a grant from Walmart to help feed kids right here at home. Walmart has launched a "Fighting Hunger Together," initiative. It's a national campaign where money is awarded to programs that get the most votes in this online contest. The voting campaign is being held on Facebook. To vote just use the link on the left side of your screen.

People from across the country have been able to vote in this contest which has more than 300 different hunger relief organizations competing. Grants will be awarded to the 40 food banks with the most votes. Those grants will be used to support local child hunger relief programs. Feeding South Dakota plans to use the funding to help support the BackPack program, which provides more than 5,000 children in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and surrounding communities with a weekend package of food. Funding would provide 310 children with a weekend food package for an entire school year. The BackPack Program helps kids with food on the weekends. Organizers say it's meant to help kids during the time between when school is dismissed on Friday and when it starts again on Monday. Organizers also say it's so important for a child to be able to focus on school and not on where their next meal will be coming from.

You can vote in this contest until 11:59pm ET on Tuesday. As of very early Tuesday morning Feeding South Dakota had just over 1,000 votes and was in 65th place. To get the grant they need to make it into the top 40. Again you can use the link on the left side of your page to vote and help them get closer to the top 40.
