Airport Tests Security Measures

Posted: Updated:

Airports are one place where security is very important.  So, to test out their safety measures the Sioux Falls Regional Airport held voluntary vehicle inspections today.

"It could be a national situation maybe to the extreme of a 9/11 situation.  It could be even something similar to a Boston scenario where we have an incident that happened (and) we don't know the full extent," said Dan Letellier, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.

What ever situation comes up, airport personnel need to be ready to respond.  Today the Sioux Falls regional airport conducted a training exercise to help prepare for an event requiring heightened security measures.

"So today we're pulling vehicles aside that are willing to participate in this exercise and then having officers actually conduct the vehicle inspection for those cars, or vans, or pickups," said Letellier.

"I think it's a safety thing.  It's just good policy I think to do spot inspections," said Leroy Slepikas, who volunteered to have his vehicle inspected

The main goal of the vehicle inspections is to locate any type of explosives.

"They look in the back seat, they look in the trunk, they look underneath the vehicle too," said Letellier.

And practicing the procedures allows the city of Sioux Falls Police Department, Transportation Security Administration and Sioux Merchant Patrol a chance to try out and tighten up their safety measures.

"If we were given the notice to implement this security measure, we want to have a process in place that does work, that we can implement on short notice," said Letellier.

The exercise fulfills a requirement of federal regulations, which must be done every three years.  Several folks chose to participate in the exercise making it a success.
