The Iowa-based Fareway Grocery chain opened up its first store in Sioux Falls Wednesday.
Fareway Foods is located at 41st and Grange next to Hobby Lobby.
With this new option for groceries in the city, we did a basic price comparison at Fareway, Walmart and HyVee supermarkets using five grocery staples.
We're comparing store-brands of a box of cereal, a half gallon of 2% milk, a loaf of split-top wheat bread, five bananas and a pound of 85 percent ground beef.
The price of cereal, milk and bread was fairly similar at each store, but the price per pound of produce and meat does vary a little more.
The total receipt for all five items after tax was $11.18 at Fareway, $11.55 at Walmart and $13.03 at HyVee, but keep in mind, the exact weight of the meat and bananas did vary at each store, which impacted these totals.
Many of Fareway's shoppers say price is a big factor for grocery shopping.
Price is a big factor for many of Fareway's shoppers.
"I shop Fareway all the time in Iowa, I always find the best prices here and I love the meat market, in my hometown they always take care of me and I get the best," said Fareway customer Carla Ridout.
Fareway and other grocery retailers are working around the price wars by matching competitors prices.
"There's no need to bring in the printed advertisement, we already have it matched for you right on the shelf," said Fareway Grocery Manager Jeff Mcelvain.
What this grocery store comparison doesn't show is quality of the product, customer service or convenience of location—all of which are important factors when it comes to grocery shopping.
