War veteran finally receives Purple Heart

Posted: Updated:

Charles Bledsoe is a man of honor.

"Charlie is truly a member of the greatest generation. He answered the call to serve," said Senator Tim Johnson.

Bledsoe service in the Army during World War II. While stationed in Germany he was severely injured in action. He was read his last rites and in a coma for weeks.

"First they told me I was missing in action. Then, wounded in action. Then, killed in action. Then, they had a funeral for me. So, I'm going to get two funerals out of this." said Bledsoe.

Proud of his service, Bledsoe's discharge papers didn't reflect his sacrifices, and that bothered him.

"They didn't have my discharge right to start with. Senator Johnson made it right," said Bledsoe.

Worthy of a Purple Heart, Bledsoe got his wish today.

"Charles. on behalf of a grateful nation it is with great pleasure that I present the Purple Heart and Bronze Star to you in recognition of your military service and sacrifice," said Sen. Johnson.

Bledsoe can now tell his old war stories a bit differently. He's got a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star to add to his chest of honors.
