One teen recovering, another arrested in shooting in Britton

A teenager from the Britton area is recovering from a head injury after a shooting Wednesday afternoon. An 18-year-old Britton High School student was arrested.

Marshall County Sheriff Dale Elsen said the boys were hanging out in an area where most kids loiter after school. Elsen said they received a call from the hospital at 4:25 pm Wednesday that a 17-year-old boy was shot in the head in an accidental shooting.

Elsen said during the investigation the alleged shooter was showing the gun to his friend, claimed it was unloaded and the gun went off. However, Elsen said after investigating and talking with witnesses and talking with the suspect again the story changed.

Dusty Groom, 18, of rural Lake City was arrested for reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm on school property and false reporting to police. The gun was a .22 caliber pistol.

Elsen said the 17-year-old victim was taken to a Fargo hospital Wednesday night. The teen has been able to talk and said his head does not hurt anymore. The teen is expected to receive a head scan on Thursday.

Sheriff Elsen said the investigation is ongoing and they want to talk to the victim as soon as he is out of the hospital. Groom is expected to make a court appearance on May 20.
