2013 concealed pistol permit numbers high for SD

Posted: Updated:

The latest numbers show South Dakota had record numbers of new and renewed pistol permits, so far in 2013.

Those numbers might surprise you.

We're four months into 2013 and, so far, in South Dakota, the amount of permits issued in the four months is already 80% of the total permits issued in 2012.

So far in 2013, South Dakota issued 14,442 permits.

That compares to a total of 18,031 in 2012 and 15,794 total the year before.

We stopped by the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office, Thursday, where the county has had records of its own. They've already issued close to 2,100 since January compared to 2,800 total last year.

They blame the three-month spike on gun control debate in Washington, D.C. Talks of a possible ban had many people concerned and wanting to make their move before it was too late.

Sergeant Jason Gearman says numbers came down in April, though another spike isn't out of the question.

"It depends on what pops up with the Washington, D.C. situation with the gun control issues that have been coming up. I imagine there will be a spike and then go back to normal," Minnhehaha County Sgt. Jason Gearman said.

At the peak, the MCSO was taking in roughly 100 permit applications a day. Now that things have slowed, they're back to normal which means about 30 per day.
