Neighbor reacts after Yankton fatal hit-and-run scene, Friday

Posted: Updated:

Yankton County authorities have identified the 23 year-old Yankton man after he was killed in a hit-and-run, Friday morning.

It was an active scene for about 9 hours, Friday morning, along Old Highway 50 or 309th Street in rural Yankton County.

We talked with one neighbor who lives nearby.

"When we were at home we didn't know what was going on," Julie Christensen said.

Julie Christensen woke up Friday morning to a phone call from her dad about the active scene unfolding outside of his home. Julie and her family live just down the road.

"You go through your mind and it's kind of scary to think that could happen just a quarter mile down the road from us," Christensen said.

The Yankton County Sheriff's Office has identified the man as Joseph Jackson, 23, of Yankton but still working to find more details about how, and why, this happened.

"There's a couple housing developments back here. I don't know if he'd be walking to work or from town," Yankton County's Michael Rothschadl said. "There will be an ongoing investigation to find out what exactly happened..."

Christensen admits she's surprised, though she knows it's a rural area and these things can - and will - happen.

"Since they've re-done the road, it is a little bit harder to see in the evening and times like that. Most of the time, people who are walking that late they don't have the reflective jackets or anything on," she said. "For someone to actually get hit and then not know what's going on and be a hit-and-run, that's even scarier."

The investigation is ongoing and authorities ask that if anyone with information regarding the incident to contact them at (605) 668-3567 or anonymously with Crime Stoppers at (605) 665-4440.
