Study: Weight loss surgery not just for severe cases

Posted: Updated:

There's new evidence weight loss surgery can help moderately obese people get rid of excess pounds.

The most popular form of Bariatric weight loss surgery involves placing an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach.

That creates a new smaller pouch allowing the patient to eat only small amounts of food.

Right now the surgery is only available to morbidly obese people.

But new data shows it could help the moderately obese too.

One year after surgery, nearly 85% of the patients had lost at least 30% of their weight.
