Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls is celebrating four groundbreaking ceremonies in one week. The groundbreaking ceremony is the first big event for a homeowner to let them physically see the building of their home is underway.
Two ground breaking ceremonies were held on Monday. One on Pennsylvania Avenue and the other on North Alaska Avenue in Sioux Falls. On Thursday two more groundbreaking ceremonies will be held, both on North Colorado Avenue in Sioux Falls.
One of the homes on North Alaska Avenue is being called the Frank Duffy Build. The Frank Duffy Build is in honor of their long-time volunteer and supporter of the Habitat ReStore,Frank Duffy. He passed away this year and organizers say he will be sorely missed.
One of the homes on North Colorado Avenue is a CTE build. The CTE Build marks the third year Habitat has partnered with the Career and Technical Education Academy to construct a home. The students build the house indoors at the lab at the high school and then it gets moved to the lot for completion.
These four houses will mark homes 111, 112, 113 and 114. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls has built or rehabilitated 110 homes since 1991.Those homes have provided 168 adults and 421 children, with a place to call home. Habitat Sioux Falls has completed 58 critical home repairs as a part of the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative since 2011.
Also going on this week is National Women Build Week. More than 10,000 women are expected to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the country through May 12th. After being postponed due to weather, on Saturday, May 11th, volunteers from the greater Sioux Falls area will paint the Habitat home of a single mom and her two young boys in Canton. Many women have already signed up for this event but there are still a few spots open to help Saturday afternoon. If you're interested in volunteering contact Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls.
Homeowners are selected by Habitat based on their need for housing, ability to pay a 0% interest mortgage, and willingness to partner with Habitat. Mortgage payments contribute to a Fund for Humanity, which in turn provides money to build more homes.
