Facebook Post: Herseth Sandlin will not run for Senate

Posted: Updated:

Stephanie Herseth Sandlin says she will not run for US Senate in 2014, ending months of speculation after Sen. Tim Johnson announced his retirement.

Herseth Sandlin announced she is not running for US Senate through a Facebook post, early this morning. She thanked her supporters for the encouragement over the years, but she said after careful contemplation she concluded, "that the future should continue to be focused on the plans we laid last year at this time."

"While I know you share my confidence that working together we could win a statewide race next year, I'm also confident that the decision not to run is the right decision for Max, Zachary, me and our entire family," Sandlin said in her post.

Many have speculated Herseth Sandlin would run for Senate after Sen. Tim Johnson announced his retirement. US Attorney Brendan Johnson, also Sen. Johnson's son, was also eyed as a possible candidate but it was confirmed he would not run when Rick Weiland threw his name into the ring last week.

"I wouldn't be in this race making this announcement at this time if I thought Brendan Johnson was going to be a candidate for the U.S. Senate. I've known Brendan for a couple of years now," Weiland told KSFY News last week.

Weiland ran against Stephanie Herseth Sandlin back in 2002 for a seat in the House. So far, he is the only democrat seeking the office and former Governor Mike Rounds is the only republican running for the seat.

As for Herseth Sandlin, she did not completely rule out politics down the road, stating in her Facebook post, "There is no way of knowing if there will be another opportunity to serve South Dakota in elective office, but I'm so grateful for the opportunity I did have in an earlier and different stage of my life and for all the great friends I made along the way."
