South Dakota officials urge caution in dealing with vendors

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - State officials say South Dakotans should use caution when dealing with out-of-state vendors who are selling products or services.

The state Revenue Department says many vendors are legitimate, but people should make sure vendors are reputable before doing business with them.

The department says before hiring someone to provide repair or construction services, people should get a written price quote, ask for local references, get a permanent address and phone number, and make sure the contractor has insurance.

The department says that before buying fruit, magazine subscriptions and other products, people should ask about warranties and get something in writing with the company's name, address and phone number.

Buyers also should verify that vendors have a valid state sales tax or contractor's excise tax license.
