Officers, family gather for memorial service in Pierre

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Law enforcement officers from federal, state and local agencies gathered to remember their fallen colleagues on Wednesday.

Family members of the fallen officers also attended the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service at Madison Avenue Church of Christ in Pierre. The service included songs, a video tribute and prayer.

Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender says the service has become even more meaningful to him since 2 of his Rapid City officers were killed in a shootout in 2011.

Pierre Police Chief Bob Grandpre, who gave the invocation, says it is important for all officers to come together, be silent and contemplate.

68 law enforcement officers from South Dakota have died in the line of the duty.
