R.F. Pettigrew statue placed at Falls Park entrance

Posted: Updated:

When driving into Falls Park in Sioux Falls visitors will be greeted by one of South Dakota's founders, Richard F. Pettigrew.

Pettigrew was one of South Dakota's first US Senators, serving from 1889-1901. He was born in Vermont in 1848 and his family moved to Wisconsin 1854. Pettigrew studied law in Iowa. He eventually settled in Sioux Falls.

On Friday, a bronze statue in Pettigrew's honor was placed on a pedestal at the entrance of Falls Park. The statue is the work of local sculptor Darwin Wolf, who launched the project in 2005 and began sculpting in 2009. The sculpture was completed this spring at BronzeAge Art Casting, a bronze foundry in Sioux Falls.
