SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries made their 2013 season debut this past weekend, and more than 9,000 fans welcomed home the Birds.
For the second straight year, the three-game, season-opening series saw a substantial increase in attendance from the year prior. In total, 9,295 came through the gates at Sioux Falls Stadium this weekend, a 33 percent increase from last year's combined attendance of 6,966. In 2011, the combined attendance for the home-opening series was 3,378, although that was a mid-week series.
"It was a great start to the season," Canaries president/CEO Tom Garrity said. "The support from our fans and our sponsors has been outstanding thus far and we are working hard to make sure everyone's experience at the ballpark this year is a good one. I think fans will notice all the improvements we have made when coming out the stadium."
Some of the new features to a fan's game-day experience include:
· Giveaways to fans at every Saturday home game.
· The Dugout Divas, the Canaries dance and usher team.
· The return of Jorge, the on-field emcee.
· New food options, including the Loaded Potato Curveball, which is a deep-fried loaded baked potato on a stick. On Friday and Saturday home games, Ovations Food Services features Smoked Prime Rib, Hot Dogs, and Pork Loin.
· Kids singing "Y.M.C.A." during the eighth inning at every home game.
The Canaries play at home this week, hosting their division rivals, the St. Paul Saints, for three mid-week games starting on Tuesday. Each game at 7:05 p.m. Fans can take advantage of great daily specials. On Tuesday, fans who bring a canned good food item to donate to Feeding South Dakota can buy 2-for-1 tickets. On Wednesday, it's Ladies Night. There are drink specials all night for women in attendance. Thursday is Happy Hour Thursday; drink specials start at 5 p.m. and continue until the first pitch of the game. Fans can enjoy $1 beers until first pitch, and $2.50 beers during the game.
The Canaries are offering several new ticket plans for the 2013 season, including the "Weekender" and the return of the "Perch Packs." Contact the Canaries office at (605) 336-6060 or visit www.sfcanaries.com for more information.
