Augie's Norwegian Connection

Posted: Updated:

Running alone is something very few people like to do. Just you against the pavement, step by step, breath by breath, it's a tough battle.  So its good for Augustana runners Runa Falch and Kristin Brondbo to have each other.

"They really work well together, feed off of each other, they utilize their own motivation to beat one another, it's a healthy rivalry but I think it makes them become better runners." says Augie coach Tracy Hellman.

Falch and Brondbo are two of the best colliagete runners in America and will be headed to compete in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Track and Field Nationals in Pueblo, Coloardo.

"Yeah its always fun to go to nationals, bigger meets, its good competition. I feel like ts nerveracking but its more exciting, like in that way its more fun." says Falch.

As these two athletes put on their blue and gold uniform, they feel a special connection to the Augustana Viking mascot, as Falch and Brondbo both hail from Norway, along with Harold Karbo and Henrik Holmberg who will be compeating in nationals as well.

"In my tenure we have had I think 13-15 Norwegian athletes come and run for me, and I don't see that slowing down, it's a natural fit, they like it here and I don't see that slowing down." says Hellman.

Although Falch and Brondbo are thousands of miles from their homeland they don't see many changes in where they are now.

"Not a lot of differences, but for sports its something new to be attached to a team, the way people, unning is more individualistic in Norway.  It's been beneficial to be in the Midwest same weather as Norway."  says Brondbo.

But as the number of races for Falch and Brondbo dwindle with each and every step, their mark on the Augie's running program will be around for much many races to come.

"They have had success at every step of the way, they are gonna be kids that we miss extensively, this is going to be a good opportunity for them to out on a high note." says Hellman.
