State to sell Platte to Napa abandoned rail line

Posted: Updated:

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Railroad Board is planning to sell an abandoned railroad line from Platte to Napa Junction near Yankton next month.

State air, rail and transit program manager Bruce Lindholm says the $1.5 million deal with Iron Horse Development Co. should be ready to finalize at the board's June 19 meeting.

The board agreed in 2006 to sell the state-owned line to Wagner Native Ethanol for $1.5 million, but voted last year to accept new proposals to renovate and restore service on the line after the company missed deadlines to shore up financing.

Plans call for renovating the eastern part of the line while letting the line west of Wagner from Ravinia to Platte be dismantled and salvaged to fund the reconstruction.
