Sioux Falls police department beefs up patrol officers

Posted: Updated:

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer, and Sioux Falls police want us to remember to be safe.

Friday night, the department did a saturation patrol. An extra 16 officers are on the roads watching for impaired drivers and seat belt violations.

"The bottom line is seat belts save lives. It's huge. Statistics show you that in South Dakota 53% of people killed in traffic crashes were unbelted. So, if you can cut the fatality rate in half by convincing people to buckle up that would be huge," said officer Bret Hamlyn.

Police are also planning a daytime saturation patrol for Saturday, June 1st.
