Program for young people with disabilities expands

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota program that provides employment training for young people with disabilities is expanding to Brookings.

Project Search has been operating internship programs at Avera McKennan Health Care Systems in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen for three years. A third site will begin training students in August at South Dakota State University in Brookings.

The program is a partnership between businesses, local school districts, the state Department of Human Services and the state Department of Labor and Regulation.

The program primarily helps students between the ages of 18 and 21 with intellectual disabilities. They have completed the requirements for high school graduation, and attend employment training classes, work in a business environment and rotate through three internships during a school year. They often wind up with full-time employment with benefits.
