Increased patrols on I-90 between Chamberlain and Fairmont

Posted: Updated:

If you were out driving on I-90 today -- and thought you saw a few more patrol cars than usual -- you would be right.

Highway Patrol from both South Dakota and Minnesota were out in full force as part of a high visibility campaign to promote and encourage safe driving.

     It was quite a sight.

You couldn't go very far today on I-90 without seeing a trooper.

     One right after the other.

We saw several people who got pulled over.

But the troopers weren't just limited to the South Dakota side.

Today was a joint safety operation with Minnesota troopers to keep the roads safe.

Troopers took to the interstate and focused on stopping criminal activity as well as reducing crashes -- injuries and fatalities.

They started at 6AM and covered I-90 all the way from Chamberlain, South Dakota to Fairmont, Minnesota.

Captain Kevin Joffer of the South Dakota Highway Patrol tells us this was chance to remind drivers out on the road to make safe choices. "Wearing seatbelts, distracted driving, drunk driving, hazardous moving violations, whether it's speeding or reckless driving, or cutting someone off, those are all important violations and we just want to draw attention to the people with this high visibility campaign to let them know that not only do we address it every day but we want to remind them that those are still things that cause crashes."

Joffer says the high visibility of troopers should encourage drivers to make safe choices.

And while we rode along in the patrol car -- we could see many people slowing down and changing their behavior once they saw the trooper coming.

And for speeders -- his radar could tag you from all angles.
