Two people shot overnight in Clear Lake: suspect found dead in home

Posted: Updated:

Tragedy and fear overnight in Clear Lake, South Dakota as two people were shot by a man who then apparently turned the gun on himself.

The gunman is believed to be 40-year-old Brett Pommer.

Police say he shot two people: those victims were flown to area hospitals and have not been identified.

At one point, this incident also involved an armed stand-off with police.

This would rock any community, let alone a small one...where people live because they want to feel safe.

It is the type of sight that stops you in your tracks and makes a pit in your stomach: armored vehicles amidst armored police officers in the middle of the night.

"Scared...worried." Clear Lake resident Kari Lovre learned from a phone call that something was going on at a home on the south side of town. And that it involved guns....and shootings....and danger....and she's not afraid to say that this is about the last thing she expected to happen here. But now she knows better. "Cause you never know what could happen. You think you live in a small town, everybody knows everybody...and you find out you really don't."

What we know for sure is that two people were shot...and the believed gunman was involved in a stand-off with police before apparently turning the gun on himself.

But there are still a lot of unresolved questions: what happened? Who was shot and why? Are those shooting victims OK?

And then there are the other questions that get asked: questions in the minds of people like Kari Lovre. The questions that come when you realize that violent crime can happen anywhere, at any time, to any one....you or the people you love. "No matter what you do there's always going to be something there that could possibly happen...no matter how much you protect them...it's hard."

One of the lead agencies involved in this investigation is the South Dakota Attorney General's office.

We are in contact with them tonight, hoping to learn more about what unfolded in Clear Lake overnight.
