Lowinger & Associates hired to maintain Sioux Falls sculptures

Posted: Updated:

The City of Sioux Falls owns 39 pieces for art that can take a lot to keep up. To help with that, the City hired an outside company to maintain the masterpieces on the sidewalks.

If you head out to Falls Park or take a stroll down Phillips Avenue, you will notice many hand crafted sculptures all around you. However, these sculptures are susceptible to harsh climates.

"These things live outdoors and you know what your climate is so they have to be cared for," art conservator Rosa Lowinger said.

Sioux Falls has hired Rosa Lowinger & Associates to maintain the outdoor artwork in the city. The contract was announced at a press conference in Sioux Falls Wednesday morning.

Lowinger is considered a leader in the field of conservation of built heritage, a subject which includes art, architecture, museum collections and public spaces.

Rosa Lowinger & Associates signed a three-year contract with Sioux Falls. She and her crew started working on Sioux Falls' sculptures several weeks ago. She said they are going piece-by-piece to make sure all the results are protected.

"I've seen people all around town looking at pieces and if you don't maintain them, they fall apart just like anything else," Lowinger said.
