A family shopping trip at a local Walmart ends with two people in jail and three kids in protective custody.
Walmart security guards tried to stop two shoplifters who ran from the store.
But it didn't stop there.
They took off in a van with three kids in tow, and police followed in pursuit.
Joanna Swallow, 28, of Mitchell faces charges including three counts of abuse and cruelty to children.
And Robert Salinas, 34, faces second degree robbery and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
Police arrested these two for the midnight chase which started at the east side Walmart.
What started as a shoplifting case at Walmart soon turned into a chase
Sioux Falls Police Officer Greg Schmit said "from there it went to the pursuit to which the vehicle was finally stopped and the individuals were then arrested."
It all began when Walmart security guards stopped two people suspected of shoplifting, they dropped what they were carrying and ran.
"Numerous children's clothing items, there was also a DVD or two but that what got them stopped at the door," Schmit said.@
And it was those item's which gave a clue as to who might be in the van with the suspects.
"At first we did not know that. It was through information given to us by officers at Walmart that said there were children with the vehicle and so it does make a difference," Schmit said.@
But once police found out kids were along for the ride, they slowed down the chase.
"It's just a good thing that things didn't end up a different way. As soon as we found out that there were children in there, our officers backed off and we just followed," Schmit said.@
Police say teamwork, training and professionalism helps them prepare for calls like this one.
"The sheriffs office, the police department, the highway patrol, we all work very closely together. we all do lot's and lots of training which helps in anything," Schmit said.@
Robert Salinas is a wanted man in North Dakota for engaging in sex with an 11-year-old.
He has an extradition hearing set for July 19th.
Both Salinas and Joanna Swallow have a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 2nd.
Each will remain in custody unless they post a $25,000 bond.
