A severe thunderstorm watch has been posted for portions of extreme west central Minnesota, north central and northeast South Dakota and south central and southeast North Dakota.

The thunderstorm watch is in effect until Thursday evening at 10 p.m. The severe thunderstorm watch area extends from Jamestown, ND to 65 miles south of Aberdeen. Thursday evening, storms could grow into a larger cluster and spread eastward across in northeast South Dakota, with an accompanying risk for damaging winds.

Primary threats include several large hail events with a few very large hail events, with up to 2-inch diameter sized hail. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph can also be expected, and there is a chance of a few tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm watches mean conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms. People in the area of the watch should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.
