Miller's former basketball coach looks to Heat/Spurs game 7

Posted: Updated:

The former Mitchell Kernal was a stand-out in junior high, high school and now the NBA. Even  his former coach, Gary Munsen, said despite the heat's performance tonight, he's got everyone rallying behind him here at home.

"It's been a great ride for me to watch him in the last 13 years," Retired Mitchell High School basketball coach Gary Munsen said.

Munsen led miller for years before taking off to the pro's.

"It's been great for me, great for his family, for Mitchell and the school and community and everything else. I coached 7 Miller's out of the 8. They were all great players. A couple of the others if they were 6 foot 8, they'd be playing in the pro's too but they're only 6'2''," Coach Munsen said.

Over at staple sports pub and grill in town, Score Board, proud support is felt.

"You wonder how many times he's at the middle or high school gym by himself putting up 3 after 3 saying '10, 9, 8, 7... this is for the NBA championship' and that dream could come true tonight," owner Steve Culhane said.

Memories are some Coach Munsen will never forget, easy to tell because at his home, basketball is everywhere you look.

"There he is starting, hits a 3 right away. Another with his shoe on. Now he's 33 years old, he's so much stronger. Back in high school, if he was that strong, we would've won 5 titles rather than 3," Coach Munsen laughed. "He's got one ring. I think he'll have another one after tonight."
