Watertown Police investigating a series of car burglaries

Posted: Updated:

The warm weather is perfect for outdoor activities, but Watertown police tell us criminals are also taking advantage of the conditions.

Some folks who live in Watertown are surprised, but are being proactive.

We met a few longtime Watertown residents today and they are somewhat surprised by the rise in car burglaries.

Police believe the warmer weather has more people outside and it's the perfect weather for thieves.

Watertown police tell us its investigating a series of car break-ins.

The burglaries happened early Tuesday morning, when someone entered more than eight unlocked cars then rummaged through them, taking a variety of items found inside.

Officers say some of the stolen items include CDs, cash, a car stereo and even a compound bow.

One neighbor told me although burglaries are not completely unusual, it's surprising to hear about them.

Watertown residents Glenn Johnson said "it does for this city, it really does. we've have some problems here with vandalism and such as that but as far as garage break-ins, they pretty well do it, this block particularly, the doors are always shut."

"It shows about the type of people we have in the city and the city is not that way. We're pretty well behaved here," Johnson said.

More people may be parking their cars outside this time of year, but even if parked in your drive way or in front of your house, it's a good idea to secure your valuables and lock your car.
