Severe weather safety during outdoor activities

Posted: Updated:

Severe weather warnings are in effect for most of the KSFY viewing area until 10 pm Friday.

It's the first day of summer, which means many outdoor events are planned tonight.  If you're heading outside, its even more important to stay informed on weather conditions.

The National Weather Service suggests postponing your outdoor activities if you see lightening or hear thunder.

If the storm approaches too quickly, get to a safe location.  The weather service says outdoor building such as dugouts, rain shelters and sheds are not safe locations during a storm.

They say a hard top vehicle is a better choice, but the best option is to get to a substantial building with plumbing and wiring.

In Sioux Falls, we ran into several baseball games and practices, along with an outdoor company picnic for Poet planned to bring about 300 people out to Cherry Rock Park.

While the event was still being set up, the organizers say they're keeping a close eye on the weather.

"We've been watching the radar all day just trying to keep an eye on it, a lot of people out here with smart phones so we'll be watching that, making sure everyone gets out of here if it looks like its getting to bad to be in the park," said Monica Stelzer, the event organizer.

Keeping up with the radar is the most important thing you can do if you're outside tonight. If you have a smart phone, keep it with you at all times. Keep a close on the KSFY weather app for up-to-date radar, weather alerts and warnings.
