National Park Service interpreter in Yankton portrays historical figures

Posted: Updated:

YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - A National Park Service interpretive ranger at the Dakota Territorial Capitol replica at Riverside Park in Yankton has become well-known for portraying historical figures by staying not only in costume but in character.

John Rokosz re-enacts history by portraying a fur trader, a steamboat purser, a noted preacher and abolitionist turned journalist and more.

He tells by working for the National Park Service, he can read and research historical characters and constantly learn different characters and events.

Rokosz says he's always been interested in history, but the subject wasn't his best in the classroom.

He says that many people, even lifelong Yankton residents, are unaware of the rich history in their backyard.
