Governor says exports key to agricultural growth

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says increased exports will play a key role in the continued growth of South Dakota's agricultural industry.

Daugaard says farmers, ranchers and agricultural business owners need to remember that most potential buyers are outside of the United States. He says South Dakota has increased its agricultural exports to China from just $8 million in 2008 to $54 million last year.

The governor also says increased production by South Dakota farmers and ranchers can support the additional processing of agricultural products in the state.

Daugaard spoke at the annual Governor's Ag Summit in Pierre. About 200 people attended the event to discuss ways of expanding the state's agricultural economy.

Agriculture is South Dakota's largest industry. It has a $21 billion annual economic impact.
