Two kayakers OK after water rescue at Palisades State Park

Posted: Updated:

Two kayakers are OK after rescue crews conducted a water rescue at the Palisades State Park near Garretson, Sunday afternoon.

It was an active scene for about an hour as dozens of first responders from around Minnehaha County worked to rescue two stranded kayakers in the river.

Emergency Manager Lynn DeYoung tells KSFY News three people were in a kayak when it tipped. One adult made it to shore, two juveniles were stranded when rescue crews arrived.

"One of them had minor injuries. Crews had responded with high-angle rescue, both were removed safely without incident," Minnehaha Emergency Manager Lynn DeYoung said. "This one, fortunately, ended in a positive way. We all know there have been tragedies in the past and will be in the future because people don't take safety seriously and don't match their skills to the water."

DeYoung says this is a good reminder to wear life jackets when in the water because the three kayakers at Palisades State Park, Sunday afternoon, were not wearing any.
