Sioux Falls Police warn about Publishers Clearing House phone scam

Posted: Updated:

Sioux Falls police are warning people about a Publishers Clearing House phone scam circulating through the area.

The scam was reported to Sioux Falls police Friday afternoon. The victim said the scammer told him he just won $835,000 from the Publishers Clearing House and to claim the prize he needed to go to a different location and collect money packs to cover the cost of the taxes.

The victim said someone stayed on the line with him until he went to five different locations, collecting $9,400. Then, the suspect told the victim someone would meet him at a local bank in the morning to give him his winnings. The victim said that did not happen.

Sioux Fall Police say another person recently received the same type of call. He realized it was a scam and said so. The man said he heard someone in the background who was not the caller say, "Hang up."
