Posted: Updated:

Power in Sioux Falls has been restored to approximately 2,200 Xcel Energy customers. The outage was caused by construction contractor.

2,193 Xcel Energy customers were affected by Wednesday's power outage. Joe Anderson, Xcel Energy, said it was caused by a crew member of a construction contractor that hit an underground cable near 9th Street and Kiwanis Avenue.

A portion of Downtown Sioux Falls is without power, but the larger area of outages is between Benson Road on the north side, 11th Street on the south side, North Covell Avenue on the west side of the road and Weber Avenue on the east side of the road.

The outage caused several businesses to close including the Minnehaha County Courthouse and Administration Building and the Sioux Falls Food Pantry.

The outage also led to two women being trapped in an elevator at Falls Center in Sioux Falls. They were freed with 10 minutes.

The outage started at around 8:35 a.m. Anderson said all customers were restored by 9:58 a.m.
