200 South Dakota airmen set to deploy to southwest Asia

Posted: Updated:

This Independence Day, about 200 airmen with the South Dakota Air National Guard are preparing to deploy overseas.

Members of the 114th Fighter Wing are heading to southwest Asia.

They'll leave later this month for an undisclosed location and could be home in the fall.

The 114th will support operations of the F-16 fighters. Lieutenant Colonel Reid Christopherson with the South Dakota Air National Guard tells KSFY News, "This is a huge deployment for us, this is what we exist for everyday, this is our real world mission and we're there to support the needs of the United States Department of Defense."

This is the 5th large-scale deployment for the 114th Fighter Wing since the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
