PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The Rev. Michael Griffin of Pierre will get a chance to minister to a different flock as he deploys to Afghanistan with a South Dakota National Guard unit.
Griffin is pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre. He also is a first lieutenant and chaplain of the Guard's 152nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.
Griffin says he joined the unit four years ago after realizing many deployed Catholic U.S. soldiers don't have a chance to meet often with clergy members or take part in Catholic ceremonies. He says he may travel a lot to other units in Afghanistan.
About 400 people attended a deployment ceremony Saturday for the 152nd, which will spend about six months in Afghanistan providing support services for transportation, supply and maintenance.
