This weekend will mark the 6th anniversary of a festival the community of Aberdeen has come to love. It's called "Miles of Smiles." It was the brainchild of an Aberdeen dentist who wanted to do something fun for his patients.
But it has become something more than that.
The pictures show something pretty special - families having a blast right here at home, at a wide ranging event that is free to everyone who wants to come.
"We realized that we had something that kids liked, parents liked and the community really loved," Dr. Darold Opp said.
Dr. Darold Opp came up with the "Miles of Smiles" event. The first year they did it, they thought maybe they would get 300 kids. They ended up with nearly 1200.
"We realized that this was an event that would be great if we continued to do it." And they have continued to do it, every year. And they have succeeded in keeping admission free to everyone. Which can be tough, because Dr. Opp grows the event every year.
"We have over 40 costumed characters there for people to see. Anything from Disney princesses to super heroes. This year we have angry birds are new." Costumed characters, games, food; All have combined to make "Miles of Smiles" an event that Aberdeen has really embraced.
"Its just a fun, fun day. There aren't many things like it. That's what's unique about it."
"Miles of Smiles" is this Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00pm at Wylie Park's Storybook Land.
