Avera Medical Minute ASH: Equipping Parents to become better Moms & Dads

Posted: Updated:

Whether it's the terrible two's or even moody pre-teens, for many parents out there, raising your kids can be a struggle. But you're not alone! Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton is here to help by offering classes specifically for parents.

For a child, imitating their parents is what allows them to learn about themselves. So parents, are you being the best role model for your children? If you don't know where to turn, Erika Detweiler's parenting class might come in handy.

"We can always learn something new, we can always gain something and there are always ways to grow." Said Detweiler.

Erika Detweiler is a social worker at the Avera Medical Group Behavioral Health in Yankton. Her class is the only one of it's kind offered in the Yankton area and it's a class for all kinds of parents regardless of your level of training.

"Parents who feel like I just need a few more resources just a few more tips something to build on what I already have, but it can also be for parents who feel like they are at the end of the rope and don't know what else to do." Said Detweiler.

This six week program isn't just an informational clinic, it's more like a tune-up that gives parents practical skills they can use immediately.

"We're focusing on parenting the Love and Logic way; which provides resources and tools that can help with setting limits, avoiding un-winnable arguments, avoiding power struggles, basically tools that can help a family achieve healthy relationships and raise responsible respectful children." Said Detweiler.

The main concept is teaching parents the right way to interact with their children. Whether your kids are young or old, parents can use the learned principles in ways that will work best for their family.

"It's not specific to when they are teenagers do this or when they're 15-months do that, it's more of a general way. It's resources for the parent and how they manage themselves and conduct consequences in the home." Said Detweiler.

Taking a class like this doesn't mean you've failed as a parent, rather it's a way to enhance the parenting you're already giving. So whether you're getting ready for your first or think you're a seasoned parenting pro, this class might be worth checking out.

The parenting class will meet every Tuesday from 5:30-7pm, starting July 23rd and will run through August 27th. The classes will be held in the Pavilion located on the campus of Avera Sacred Heart in Yankton. The cost is $90 per person or $100 per couple. Space is limited so if you'd like to register just call (605) 655-1240. For more information just call 877-AT-AVERA.
