SDSU's Cookies 'n' Cream named best ice cream treat in South Dakota
From academics to athletics, South Dakota State University continues to propel itself onto the national stage, but now, for culinary reasons, it is receiving top honors.
Food Network Magazine tracked down the most delicious desserts in America and SDSU Dairy Bar's Cookies ‘n' Cream was ranked the best dessert in South Dakota.
South Dakota State claims it is the original creator of Cookies ‘n' Cream ice cream. The idea was sparked in 1972, when dairy plant manager Shirley Seas and a judging team were on their way to Atlantic City, NJ. They stopped at a little restaurant that had a small counter freezer and at the restaurant they were putting Oreo cookie crumbles on top of ice cream.
SDSU's Cookies ‘n' Cream wasn't concocted into a treat until 1979 by Joe Van Treeck and Joe Leedom, with Shirley's motivation.
Currently, the dairy bar offers four different flavors of Cookies ‘n' Cream—plain, chocolate, mint and strawberry.
