Mitchell's Starlite Drive-in theater closing at the end of the season

Posted: Updated:

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - One of the last drive-in theaters in South Dakota is shuttering its doors.

The Starlite Drive-in in Mitchell is closing at the end of the season.

Owner Jeff Logan says he is forced to shut down the theater because of the industry's conversion to digital projection. Studios have said they expect to stop releasing movies on film around the end of the year.

Logan says converting to digital costs about $70,000 per screen and has higher operating costs.

He says it does not make good business sense to invest that money into the drive-in because the season is too short in South Dakota.

The Starlite was built in 1949. Logan purchased it in 1976. He closed it in 1986 but re-opened it in 1993.
